The DEALS

The DEALS are a set of comprehensive psychosocial activities designed to build resilience of children and young people and improve coping skills to better ‘deal’ with the challenges of every day life. The DEALS combine creative activities and games with group discussions and home assignments.

The DEALS now consist of 5 different interventions designed for 5 different groups:

I DEAL
I DEAL was the first intervention to be developed and is designed to strengthen the resilience of children and young people.

The I DEAL intervention was initially developed for the children and young people with whom War Child was working in Uganda. The research and design was conducted largely in Uganda and then tested in other countries, revised and rolled out globally.

I DEAL is an effective intervention for children between 11 and 15 years old, as well as for young people between 16 and 20 years old.

BIG DEAL
Because young people face additional challenges in their lives, additional modules, called BIG DEAL, were developed especially for this age group. These modules can be added to the I DEAL program and focus on for example rights and responsibilities, leadership and gender relations.

PARENTS AND TEACHERS DEAL
Parents, caregivers and teachers are also extremely important in realizing lasting change in the lives of children. PARENTS DEAL and TEACHERS DEAL have been developed as complementary interventions for important adults in children’s lives. This allows children and their parents and teachers to explore topics such as child – adult relationships and conflict and peace at the same time. Having PARENTS and TEACHERS DEAL groups running parallel to I DEAL groups, is proving to be an effective combination as children, as well as their parents and teachers begin to apply new skills in their home and school environments.

SHE DEALS
SHE DEALS is an intervention initiated to address the specific challenges faced by vulnerable girls in conflict affected areas. The modules build skills and address challenges around for example young motherhood, experiences with sexual violence, and experiences with commercial sex work.
